There is a lot of buzz that Nokia might just launch its very own app store at the Mobile World Congress to be held in Barcelona from 16 to 19 February. The man behind the buzz is Eldar Murtazin, a Russian editor of the Mobile-Review. If Nokia does launch the app store rumored to be up and running behind the scenes, its defintely going to have all its bases covered in terms of taking on competitors like the Apple iPhone, Sony Ericsson Xperia, Blackberry Storm, Toshiba TG 01, T-Mobile G1, Samsung Omnia or the LG Cookie phone! The N97 is going to shred the competition if app developers start building actively for the Nokia platform.
My question to Nokia is, what happens to this and why cant we have the app store directly integrated into Ovi? Take on any comparison of the Nokia N97 done with any other phone and the only thing that the reviewer would conclude by is saying that Nokia still lacks a functional app store. I wonder what theyre going to say now? Keep your your fingers crossed until MWC 2009 :/

An app store is very vital for n97 success.Till then iphone will rule in the market
@Suban: will this app store be out on time?i of course mean the time when n97 is launched?
Dude download store is definitely not as good as the app store.they should be pulling it down and start on a fresh slate
@Sushil - I think Nokia wont take any chances with the Nokia N97 and will surely have its app store up and running by the time of the launch. The N97 is Nokia's opportunity to nullify any threats to its turf. It hasnt made any errors with the design and surely wont with the services.
@Suban...thats a fair/logical guess. i'll say,but no concrete news, right? Is there any officail communictaion from Nokia?Plus the app store might get up but the functionality might be damn basic and not as good as iphone stuff.
And btw dude, thanks for replying at this hour of the day!
@Sushil - With our exams on, we hardly get to sleep anyways! There has been no official communication from Nokia, but almost all the websites are raving about the article that Eldar wrote. Its not too much time to see whats in store anyways... just a week away.
wow!!your exams are on and u still putting in efforts for this blog and all the latest news ?hats off!!
maybe you can answer just one question for me before you are back to the books...is its just announcing that the'll have an appstore someday ?or they will launch the very first version?
good news it surely is...but what kind of application does nokia plan to have?
what i mean is same ones from previous phones?some brilliant ones available from other sources for free ;P
or linked to all the widget competitions they are having?
@Geetika - I think it should have third party applications.
@Kumar - If they do announce, I think they would release the store as well!
Hmm! Interesting... Customized apps with a powerful engine like this would be deadly.
it would be definitely a great thing to have a dedicated app store fro Nokia phones
till recently nokia phones used to score highest on the number of pre-installed apps. others were able to take the crown away because of third party apps. this move will be similar to "the empire strikes back" move from starwars... curious to see how the competition is gonna react to this, especially the ones who are part of the open handset alliance.
I feel App store is must to hav for nokia because if it doesnt or if not well in time- Apple will keep ruling
App store is must to have a top of mind recall for nokia as till date that place is being occupied by Iphone-So nokia! the sooner the better
i beleive dat its absolutely true neha...it's very important to have app store to keep nokia in place.. and be the leader as usual...
An offbeat one , but I am curious to know if they have something for free in there ?
Any clue about the pricing ? Happy to pay upto $5 for some must have applications.
Yeah, its the 3rd Party Apps thats gonna give the hardware realize its true potential!
appstore is needed if nokia has to match up with apple in this competition
any idea what they would charge for this one?per app cost?
Nokia has always promoted 3rd party developers since the days of S40 series phones.
It is a major promoter for Open development for Symbian 40 and 60 series OSes and its portal forum.nokia.has always been providing the SDKs and support for the same.
This App store is going to redefine the poprietry mobile software market and will be the biggest gift for users. "A vast collection of usable toos, by the ommunity itself"
Just as expected Nokia comes with the solution for probably the only weakness in its N-series platform, applications. The launch of nokia's app store at the Mobile World Congress surely makes N-97 the best smartphone deal in the market right now..
app store is funn.. but what about some live commentary from matches? is there such high video streaming capability suppported.. if offered by the service provider?
how about on-the-move music launch updates.. n news about celebrity get-togethers to cater to the crowd thts gonna own it anyway?
when will they finally come out with the app store...
and what kind of apps are exepcted?
similar to those iphone is offering?
Well as far as pricing goes, my guess is 50-200 Rs in India atleast for applications. Thats a price a lot of users will be ready to pay for important functionality added to their phone. Even in the US, most apps range from 1 to 5$. Apps are all about volumes rather than big bucks in one shot.
Heard that it would be the first time developers would also be around to develop live applications. Hope the users also turn up in large numbers to get their voices heard and have it done.
Now thats called listening to the voice of the consumer!!!
Awesome work guys!!!
I believe that u can also content for the top innovators award at the meet.
all mobile phone makers shd integrate their stores...have open source....let the world share!
i wonder what would be the pricing of applications. They need to keep it really now to make people use more applications
the possibilities are endless with such an app store. i hope nokia listens to people while devloping them, or better still, give people the tools to develop new apps and let them sell their creations through the store. nokia can charge a small percentage in every app sold.
