Ask the N97! The A-GPS and Electronic compass on board tell the Nokia N97 where it is and it uses this data to dynamically update social networks with real time information. So your Orkut/Facebook status could have the location of the coffee bar you are sitting at and you could share pics and videos relating to the same with your friends. Chatting and staying online all the time would be like second nature to its owners.
The concept of "So-Lo" or Social Location is another first from Nokia and can only come from a company with years of insight into how people use their mobile phones and expect from them.
Another major insight...? Well the Nokia N97 automatically geo-tags the pictures you take in the EXIF data. So you can almost always know the exact spot where you took a particular photo :-| |

I think more smart in people's hands will bring up privacy issues related to tracking of user's location.Though i would like to see it running but i hope social networking sites can provide options to address certain privacy concerns. We might not be in position where we can find people on touch of our screens but the idea of same scares me a LOT!!! :-)
Agree with what Robbie said. This feature will bring up privacy issues. I assume that a user will be able to choose to stop showing her location to others, but still, unknowingly they might invite a trouble by revealing their location. Of course if terrorists can be lured to use this feature ;) it will great help for our intelligence(??)
another perspective to possible impact of this technology. imagine the movie serendipity with so-lo. now when u bump into people, u'll always doubt that it's more than just a coincidence. maybe features like disable it for specific friends, etc. will be handy. anyways, girls, i don't mind being chased. so expect my so-lo feature turned on as soon as the phone arrives ;)
@Robbie - Nokia has clearly mentioned even in their press release that only approved friends will be allowed to keep track of your status and So-Lo, but with new applications coming in, the future definitely looks connected!
@Ravish - Now u know why we are so crazy about the N97 :)
t all social networking websites will this feature on?Orkut facebook , myspace?
obviously there would be the option of keeping so-lo active optional! ;)
@ Sunaina - Depends on who Nokia wants to tie up with. Anyways, I think it should be possible through third party apps on these website.
As of now Nokia has tied up with VOX service for blogging, which also allows tagging...
If I am not wrong the same codes can work when embedded into orkut or facebook...
oh by the way, Facebook mobile application works perfectly fine on my N95 8GB... which allows me upload the pics too :)
in which case, if I extend the logic.. this shall allow too!!
There are many social networking interfaces that are available for S60 platforms and they truely rock. one of them is an application called MyStrands which is a social networking music player!
with such offerings and OVI rolling in.. I am sure N97 will rock big time!!
N97 is the way forward!! ohh.. I am in love with it already!
Hearing the presentation given by Nokia was insightful. The way they talk about the device being designed around 'You' is really exciting and shows how committed Nokia is to connecting people in newer and more innovative ways.
Thank god for making a device that can keep updating my FB status!
This is so cool ! Facebook on a 30 deg slide ought to the most sought after feature !
Any idea about what networks will this be available on !
We have Vodafone, 3, Optus and Telstra as the major players !
Being a business owner , this can be a device helping me multitask, even on the field , I can socialise and keep touch with my friends and family.
I hope by the time we have it 3G is a way of life in India.
Good Job Akhil n Team for putting together this useful piece of info
Cheers

No more So-LO
No more so-low :P
Nokia N97 - My social Network moves with me!!! :)
I hope I am followed too much and bothered by my fans every place I go to to have some time for myself :)
privacy can be an issue
So-Lo seems to be ideal for me - social junkie always on-the-go! Wonder whats next at Nokia!!
@Robbie. I agree it is a scary thought but even a search engine like Google collects data on user patterns. Similarly, I think the future will call for paying for the services we take in the form of information.
The so-lo feature of nokia will also fit in well with lot of other applications like the bizbuddy which requires real time information. This feature alone, makes N-97 a must buy for many business users
nokia does another first!great feature...will help social animals like me.maybe we shd get to personalise it more.by selecting ppl we want to see us in differnt so-lo...
does this featuere or any other facility make way for real-time stock tickers? i think one such phone will be of immense help to i-bankers and the like..
also, instead of stupid cranky sms alerts.. can we have google news alerts n pop-ups about business happenings around the world.. ala blackberry..?
I think the 3.5 inch touch screen really is a wonderful feature. There are not many phones in the shop with such big screen splly if its a touch screen. Also, the 30 degree slide makes it evn better .The wide touch screen is irresistible. Now i can write down(note) my thoughts without making my hands ache.
Geotag sounds interesting. Could Nokia see if it can be integrated with what http://www.flickrmap.com/ has on offer?
So-lee seems an ideal thing for social netwrking freakos like me,,
dynamic updation of location info is really neat.. :) Gotta see how many social networking sites this is extended to, other than orkut and facebook..
the feature looks great. we wouldn't have to make a zillion calls now at a movie trip to get everybody at the same place. but nokia should make sure of the security aspects of such a service before launching it. mobile viruses and trojans can easily leverage such a capability to track the user and monitor them without their knowledge.
The device is one thing, but what I found most interesting in this post was Suban’s focus on the phone as a Facebook tool. I see this firsthand, as well, from my vantage point as a college student– the importance of Facebook for the under-25 generation cannot be overstated.
Another clear paradigm shift has taken place- building phones to suit specific applications (or, more basically, the general functionality of social applications), as opposed to building your web services based on the specs of phones.
@STEX great comment!
