Nokia N97 - My Phone, My Desktop

Customization is the order of the day..be it your coffee, your suit, your automobile… its  high time we had customizable desktops. The N97 with its large 3.5 inch screen and Symbian S60 gives users the freedom to customize their desktop the way they want. So if you are hooked on to facebook or just want the latest stock tips, just put the respective widget on your phone desktop and everything is now just a finger tap away.  You can also switch your desktop with your profile. So now when you move out of office, just switch your profile and you have your latest music and orkut application on instead of your email and meeting reminders. Pretty cool, eh?
Earlier Nokia N-Series phones also did provide the feature of customizing and switching desktop shortcuts, but with N97 you can now place widgets onto your desktop so that you don’t need to go anywhere to see your favourite application. Imagine the fun of a cricket scorecard updating right on your desktop while you are in a boring meeting. Well, we didn’t find this widget suggested in the contest so we posted it ourselves. Look for our Cricket Widget in the Nokia Widget gallery.
To get users to design and suggest widget, the N-Series website is holding an innovation contest as indicated in one of our previous posts. Here is the list of top 5 suggested widgets that we found would be a great addition to your Nokia N97
MyFavorite – A simple yet  very popular widget these days jazzes up the favorites section on the desktop and also gives an option of Google search.

MiniFacebook – Be always online and always connected to your friends on Facebook.

Mp3 Player / Radio Widget – This one is for the music lovers. Have your music and FM play in a small and sleek looking player on the desktop.

GeoSpot – Find out the nearest restaurant, fuel station or ATM using the GeoSpot application.

Quick Note – Just thought of something cool or you just remembered someone’s birthday. Scribble it down before you forget.

Some of the other cool widgets like Favorite Contacts, Manager of files, Today's Comics, Chat Notifier, N-gage Widget, Web browser, quick open: office, Nokia StockX Widget are also worth a view. So go ahead and play around with your own cool Phone Desktop. Make your desktop reflect your persona

Customisability and Usability have been the USP for Nokia, and I feel with this one, they have broken all barriers.

I have done development on S60 3rd edition, developing some of these kinds of widgets myself, but the S60 5th edition API has unleashed the power to customise.

Can't just wait to port my own code on it, and harness the beautiful machine.

N97 looks amazing with hell lot of features but in order to compare its graphics & screen reception with apple iphone physical check is required.Anybody out there who has physically seen this phone can throw some light

Bringing widgets to the platform is definitely one of the things i was lookin' for. Being a mobile developer myself, i cant wait to code my own widgets.

Btw the soccer score widget would be an instant hit with the european users.

reminds me of webpart and google ig. and trust me, the websites were pretty happy when they were able to give people the ability to move things around. seeing the same happening on mobiles now is a pleasant surprise. had it not been constrained by its size (after all, you have to carry n97 around whole day in your pocket), it would've given quite a few laptops a serious run for their money.

Apart from the regular widgets, the dashboard itself reminds me of facebook. N97 seems to have identified its customers' needs spot on this time. Looking forward to N97!

Though I'm not an avid Facebook fan, I think the mini Facebook widget is pretty cool for those who are.
The Geo Spot and the Cricket applications are pretty good stuff, though.

Technology and the ease of use makes this product a sure winner. Its a pinnacle of beauty--very handy---would be much coveted as an adornment of the executive. A must buy!

Well, it seems my wish for a cricket app has been heeded to. I surely believe this widget is the choice for the widget to be added to the phone

Somehow looks similar to the Screen 3 feature Motorola offers on its 3g phones. Screen 3 also is integrated tightly with the operator's info feeds. Any such plans here in India?

djvnom said...

@Arpita - Many of the widgets will possibly have tie ups with service providers like ESPN, Facebook or Google

Well this is really cool stuff, I think Nokia has finally got its leadership established in softer aspects of mobile phones as well

I have a CricInfo widget on my office desktop during all matches. Having cricket scores on the phone on the move should be really interesting and cool. :)

The cricket widget is gonna be the USP for N97 to sell in India methinks. At least amongst the youth, given the amount of cricket happening of late. Wonder why no orkut widget!!

I think nokia got left behind by the other manufacturers when it comes to touch screen, but the nokia N97 is sure to bring nokia back to the top. Just would of liked to see it running Android!

One of my friend works for Nokia and he got a pre-released version of n97 for testing the softwre. I could not resist myself from take a close look on the phone. Everything is just amazing in the phone.

The phone cool/fancy like the iPhone or nokia Tube. It is also comfortable carrying it around in your shirt pocket. I really like the mechanical system which brings the keypad out (It works very smoothly).

The part which I liked most is the screen sensitivity. The screen is responsive enough.

The menus/shortcuts, scrollbars .. everything is well designed,

3D Bounce and A Racing game (I dont remember the name)was pre installed in the device. In the racing game you have to control the car by tilting the phone left and right. The tilt sensor has good sensitivity. I could control the car well. N97 Rocksss!

More good thing is that the phone charges via USB. Photos taken with the 5 Mpix camera looks fine in the awsom big screen, But could not get a chance to transfer the images to my laptop as I was not carrying it then, But since it's a carl zeiss, hope picture quality will be good as n95. Sound quality is also excellent via external speakers. As the phone was given to my friend to test the softwares, some functionalities were disabled like GPS, WiFi etc. so could not test them.

Overall I can say that it is a very good phone and definately will do well in market.

I would really appreciate a QWERTY keyboard on my fone as long as the fone is kept slim!!

This phone is astonishing. I've read the graphics are not to be As great as the Iphone, however, with the amount of useful little gadgets it has in comparison to the iphone, it makes it no competition whatsoever.

Just hope Nokia would bring the price down for these. However evne if i were to spend 7-800 canadian $$ on this beautiful gadget, i would Never regret it!

Cant wait for the release!
Props to nokia for making such an awesome phone!!!
