Music on the Go

So how capable is the Nokia N97 with music?
For starters, it has 32 Gb + an optional 16GB of memory to store your music. If you want, you can carry extra memory cards with your music loaded on to it. This means that technically you can carry any amount of music with you. I dont know of any suceesful portable music player including the iPod where you can do this. 48 GB of memory translates to about 12500 full tracks of about 4 MB at 160 Kbps. Averaging track length to about 3-5 minutes you get about 1 month 4 days, 17 hours and 20 minutes of continous different music :) Think of it this way - You can listen to one hour of totally new music every day for 2 years and 3 months just by loading up the N97 once.
Dont forget that the N97 comes with a standard 3.5 mm jack so you an use your favorite pair of Sennheisers/ Bose headphones or plug it into your Yamaha ampifier ;) I wonder what makers of music systems are going to come up with next? The Nokia N97 has effectvely made music systems redundant. One only needs to buy an external ampifier to have the latest top of the line music system ready! Combined with the Tv-Out port you can watch album art and song information on your TV. Possibilities anyone??
Lets dig deeper into the design of the music player

Music Menu - You can play tracks by choosing Artists, Albums, Playlists, Podcasts, Genres or Composers. If your music is well tagged, finding the right track should be just a few taps away. It features search for tracks, so you can actually type in the track you want and it will find it for you.
One salient feature of the Nokia N97 is that you can just copy paste your music folder structure onto the memory card/phone and ask the music player to refresh the library. The N97 will automatically find tracks and put them in the music menu. So you dont have to be at a particular software's mercy every time you want to load tracks.
Support for file formats - The following file formats are supported in the Nokia N97: AAC, AAC+, eAAC, eAAC+, MP3, MP4, M4A, WMA, Mobile XMF, SP-MIDI, AMR (NB-AMR), MIDI Tones (poly 64), RealAudio 7, 8, 10, True tones (WB-AMR), WAV. MP3-files with various bit rates, including VBR! You can even take play protected DRM-files (Janus DRM) by synchronizing with Windows Media Player 11 or higher. And dont forget, it has full support for album art!
Equalizer - It comes with 6 presets which except for the default setting are all fully customizable - Bass Booster, Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock. You can adjust sound balance, Stereo Widening and Loudness in the settings section.
Music Store - You can buy and download the latest tracks and albums on the road by visiting the Nokia Music Store. I personally have been able to download tracks on my 5800 XpressMusic over the web without even using the music store. Just ensure that the tracks you download are legal to be downloaded free ;)
FM Radio - Features a full blown FM radio with support for visual enhancements and auto tuning.
Internet Radio - Dont like picking tracks and making playlists? Still want to be able to control which genre you are listening to? Try the internet radio. You can choose from a multitude of options and tune in to the perfect channel for your tastes.
Podcasts - The N97 has full support for podcasts. You can access Nokia's podcast catalogue or search and subscribe to podcasts over the internet.
Playback time - The Nokia N97 features an amazing playback time of almost 35-37 hours. You wont run out of battery power on this one.
All in all the nokia N97 has delivered the fatal blow to all music player wannabes in the market. There are other phones with music capabilities in the market but the N97 has raised the bar in terms of the complete solution it offers.

@Baggy: The speaker quality is nice !!
you will be able to listen to the sound range from 60Hz to 20KHz!!
I made some ringtones for my handset using fruityloops and reason 4.0 and it simply rocked!!

and with the HUMONGOUS card space you can virtually carry your entire music collection with you wherever you go!!

I checked out the built-in equalizers and they sound pretty effective..
when plugged into an amp, your N97 can work as a decent DJ turn table!! It has a nice nice output!
Sound quality can be compared to any good music system!! you will hardly feel a difference..

of that reminds me to mention the video recording quality!!
the entire range of bass and treble can be captured!!
I have some videos uploaded on my channel they are done by an N95 video camera. N97 has the same!
you can check them out at http://www.youtube.com/user/saiklops
video name "Mayank with his didg bone...." and "StudSingh And Mayank Jams"
Trust me you won't feel let down!

Smoking Hot N97 is the way forward for music aficionados like you and me!!!!
Cheers baby!

3.5 mm jack gets my fav ear/head-phones in it... so my music sounds as good as it gets... Hope the phone hardware features some nice audio chip to keep the sound quality live upto the phone's reputation!

From what weve heard, Nokia uses a special DSP chip for its N Series and XpressMusic phones. Since their music quality is their USP, expect Nokia not to cut any corners there. If you remember, the N91 was publicized with Bose headphones. A brand like Bose wouldnt want its brand to be eroded by pairing up with cheap sound. Music as I see it is going to be delivered only online and downloaded, aggregated and listened to on portable devices like the N97.

Any words on the headphones as yet guys? I hope they have noise cancellation with this one.

i think these new phones are very economical as they combine many things together. As long as quality of sound doesn't suffer I dont mind replacing my iPod

What about music videos. . What is the kind of numbers does the phone support for music video ?

very strong music capabilities i must say.. they even accommodated podcasts!unlike iphone who just stick to their software...making things too proprietary for comfort

I like the Nokia N97 better than their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and I hope that they'll be able to incorporate the user interface of the N97 on the 5800 XpressMusic though I highly doubt that since the Nokia N97 is aimed at the high end market while the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic borders on the midrange to high-end phone segment. From the looks of the demo version, the Nokia N97 looks promising enough. It's fast and responsive. I don't know what processor or RAM they've used on this device but I guess they were able to make use of the new Symbian OS. All in all, it looks like the iPhone, Google G1 Phone and the Blackberry Storm has a new competitor to watch out for. And knowing that there are a lot of Nokia fanatics, I think that the Nokia N97 will definitely take a large part of the smartphone market.

No gadget is every perfect, but I think the N97 comes pretty close. An 8meg cam would have been nice, but cam phones will always be limited by the size and quality of their optics. A Xenon flash would have been useful though.

I like the look of the new interface, but it strikes me that Symbian still haven't caught up with OSs like Android. I think the N97 hardware with the Android OS would be perfect. On the sixe front its bigger than some, but its like having 5 gadgets in 1. Still plenty of time to work out any bugs and develop some more widgets before release and learn a few things from the mistakes by the iphone and the G1 before release. A great start!

music on phone has become ubiquitous, what will distinguish the phone is the quality of it and other auxillary services. a nice, loud and clear set of external speakers would be great too (i loved the ones that came with SE's w810i)

i today went to buy a iphone but came back empty handed because after reading about N97 so much on this blog, iphone doesn't seems to match the standards of a good trendy as well as smart business phone.

I guess the playback time will be long as compared to other fones in the market...perfect substitute for iphone
