Carl Zeiss and Nokia - the magic of photography

Any trip to the sandy beaches of Goa or the high reaching mountains of Kullu or the gushing white waters of Rishikesh is immortalized for life by the pictures and videos of the location. But what do you do when you forgot to take a camera on the trip.
With a 3.2 Mega Pixel camera as in the Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic or the new 5 Mega Pixel camera in the upcoming Nokia N97, carrying a camera for amateur photographers like me will soon be a thing of the past. A Carl Zeiss lens ensures that you get the same clarity of pictures that you would come in from a standard 3.2/5 Mega Pixel camera. To make life easier, Nokia has integrated a number of image management, editing and printing features in the phone itself, so that your phone becomes the one stop shop for managing all your favourite pictures. You can upload your latest albums on OVI, fire prints directly using Bluetooth, edit photos to increase sharpness and vary colour contrast. A dedicated photo key ensures that your camera mode loads quickly for that instant timeless shot.
A problem experienced by most camera phone users in the earlier versions was the absence of a flash light to take pictures in the dark or low light. With the new N-Series phones such as N96 and N97, a twin LED flash gives you almost the same effect of a real flash light.

Another great part is the excellent video recording quality that comes along with this camera. The 5 Mega Pixel Carl Zeiss lens records DVD quality videos in 16:9 aspect ratio. You don’t even need to download the videos to your laptop. Just plug in the AV cable to the TV out port in the phone and watch all the photos and videos directly on TV. A large 32GB memory card now ensures that you never have to delete another picture throughout a trip. So next time around, forget your camera in the top drawer, cause it seems like you don’t need it anymore.

Smile . Say Cheese !

the camera features do look great for holiday happy photographers. also, it gives an opportunity to show off the phone to other people. expect a lot of oomphs and aahs while clicking a photo with this device. the ones which were strictly reserved for a iphone till now. but for the time being, i prefer to stick to my canon S5 :)

How does one connect the phone to the TV. Does it now come with a AV cable or do i need to buy one ?

There is no official communication about the bundled accessories with the Nokia N97 as yet. The Nokia 5800 Xpress Music comes bundled with an AV cable.

Express music does not look all that great a phone.the display quality is lowely..i hope the pics look better when transferred to PC.iphone is much much better than it but the price point is good.20k i can afford to spend on the phone

and why would i invest so much for 5 mp cam..if my interest lies in photography,i shd be happy with digicams, slrs and all that jazz.iss se kya hoga.Mega pixels are no the indication of everything a good camera can do!

Kumar Ramadorai said...

twin led flash is a nice feature though.they should ensure having in all the new phones atleast.

@Kumar - firstly, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is not from the Nokia N series. It is targeted at a different consumer set as can be seen from the price point as well. It is amazing though that even the sub 20K 5800 is giving the 32K iPhone 3G a run for its money. In terms of features, honestly speaking i think the iPhone is stacked up only against the 5800 and not against the n97.

Secondly, when you buy a high end smartphone, you are not paying for the 5MP camera but for the solution. Mega Pixels are definitely not the only indication of camera quality. The other distinction is lens quality - and with Carl Zeiss on Nokia's side, your question stands answered!

@Suban,totally agree about the carl zeiss point.thanks!!

I remember a time... when phones were for the talking and SLR's for the clicking... well times change. Point though... Carl Zeiss lens == need protection... Does this have protective cover ala n72 or plain vanilla up-for-scratches?

i bought N73 an year back and the 3.2 MPXL was one of the prime reasons... this one's far superior and I would like to tell that Nokia would definitely deliver the quality that is expected out of a 5 MPXL... so Aditya be rest assured !!

i use a canon s5 IS and find it quite bulky to lug it around. mobile cameras are just not good enough. i hope this changes with nokia n97. for serious photography and treks, i am still gonna trust my S5, but the phone will be handy for party photography. keeping a record of who did what after getting drunk ;)

sounds an impressive proposition for Nokia .... message strategy !!
Bloggers you could take this up !

Bad News N97 - Before the launch the competition is ready - that too within the same OS: check out Samsung Acme - with 8 MP Cam, S60 5th Edition (same OS as that of N97) and, HDMI output... yes you read it right.

The HDMI output explains the HD 720P video capture and playback that the device is capable of... I know too much of sweat for N97... This is besides every other feature thats standard today.

sorry folks... but its better to know whats coming... With the same OS it cant be a dumb device :P

Av cable will defintely come along with bundled accessories.AV out is the best feature they are offering after all!

@Shantanu - If youve read our earlier comments, its not the pixels that make a great camera but the lenses and the hardware. 8MP is easy to achieve with a bit of interpolation applied.

And if Samsung is using Symbian 5, its just an admission by another industry player that Nokia does have the best solution to offer in terms of hardware or software.

If you read up more about the Samsung phone, you would realise that it just has a touch screen. It has much lesser memory, that too achieved my external memory card. To be honest, except for the 8MP on paper, I dont see it any better than the 5800 XpressMusic. Dont be too surprised if Nokia just replaces the camera in the 5800 and totally annihilates the competition that you speak of.

It is a tendency of some people to read a lot into specs and become what we call as Measurebators. What looks good on paper does not always translate to an exceptional solution. Its how well the services and the app store integrate with the product offering that will make the difference.

I just hate carrying along my DSLR for its size, unless there is a real opportunity to shoot... and wud want something for the causal shot as the DSLR is an overkill...

N97 seems to be the Answer

At the end of the day, mobiles are becoming devices that also have phone capability - and I really like this definition!!!

Shantanu said...

Convergence is the name of the game... we want devices that can do everything, and that too well!!!

Shantanu said...

Its totally upto your imagination to figure out who is competing.. a Vaio P also looks like a competitor... as a N97 kinda device can almsot do everything that a netbook can!

av out is a great feature...saw a Nokia kiosk in a phone store in Delhi showing off the av out of N95

A 5MP cam with a Carl Zeiss lens is definitely worth watching out for.. I would want to buy this mobile for this feature if not for anything else!! :)

N97 is the way to look forward to a gr8 phone. I think the new technology using resitive and capacitive screens makes it an ideal touch screen phone. I m lookin fwd to it.

Harman said...

i know the phone is amazing, but guys.. 5MP camera is not a big deal.. its common these days.. nokia shoud have used 7MP..
but 5MP does not stop me from buying this phone..
Launch it soon!!!!!!!

Chintan Mehta said...

@harman,its not just about the megapixels...5 mp wld be good enough

Unknown said...

I agree with chintan, for all practical purposes 5MP is pretty good. If you are getting a 7-8 MegaPix camera, then move to a SLR.

Amit Mahalingam said...

serious photographers will always go for their SLRs...and the rest can do with normal phone cams...why bother making the phone more bulky!

optical zoom is one department in which mobile phoens have been lacking so far. it would've been a nice thing to see it being included here. the sony t series cameras have the technology to incorporate optical zoom without a sliding lens. something similar could've been adopted for this phone. yes people, i know that it's not a full blown camera, and from the specs, it appears awsome, but one can always wish for more.
